in between long runs
I ran Tokyo Marathon last Sunday and I am due to running another 40k+ run this weekend. And the next weekends as well ;-) Did 19k today on my way home and plan doing two 10k runs tomorrow. Since I plan running an Ultra, my focus is completely on Mileage. Speed and track sessions are not planned. Well, my original plan calls for 3x3k and that stuff and if I feel like doing it, I will do it. But if I don't feel like, which is most likely, I just won't. On another subject: Christianes friend (the one who ran Tokyo without long run) called yesterday and asked for advise. She didn't run the day after the Marathon but she did 10k on Tuesday and 20k on Wednesday...! "What should I do now?", she asked, "I want to brake 3:30 in my next Marathon." I guess, she just has to continue her training and she will get there ;-) Don't you think?

Yes, of course you can leave out the repeating sessions in the last weeks before an Ultra run. But you should keep doing speed on 10 to 18k in order to avoid boredom, and to avoid falling into "Ultra-slack-style". Also I would not advise to do a 42+ training run every week, espacially, if you are raising your distances during the week. It will bring more tiredness than training effect.
To the "untrained friend" I have to say, that she is obviosly really gifted, and may reach the goal in the same way as she managed Tokio Marathon. But a few long runs in marathon preparation won't do harm.
Best regards from rainy Hesse.

thanks for your valuable comments, Gerald. I will follow them and add some spice (speed) here and there. Also, I will not do a long run two weeks from now. I may do one of my long runs with the "untrained friend" soon though...
