so true...

By accident I stumbled over the Blog of a runner who is much faster than me, Arturs Bareikis.
Arturs is a sub 2:30 Marathoner and his development is fascinating to see.
Why I am pointing out his blog? Well, he is very clear on how important base training is for a Marathoner. Quote from the link above:
"We live in the society where people want instant things and have no patience. With long distance running it doesnt work that way. The most important training one can do is base training. What exactly is base training? It is the foundation of endurance work where one can train on feel or heart rate and accumulate most miles during the time.  It is very wise to do base training every year 2 times or even more, and it is very hard to do because of all the races.  When I used to run in college my college coach always wanted to do intervals three times a week and do low mileage and no matter how fast I can do the intervals I was never able to maintain that pace in the races. But after college in 2011 I started jogging and running 100 mile weeks just at any pace until my body wanted to run faster on its own. Many times I was running at 8 minutes pace and at times even slower but in just 4 months I ran 1:10 half marathon, 15:12 5km. I never did any speed work just miles and miles. While in college I struggled to run 27 minutes for 8km. Of course speed work is important but it is only the icing on the cake, and not the cake."

This is also my philosophy and although I will never be that fast, it is very much worth to do a lot of base training, "slow speed" training and to give the body the chance to grow the training. You'll get automatically faster over time if you train slowly.

I wish Arturs all the best in achieving his next targets. The sky is the limit!
