Well, well, well...

Today, things didn't turn out as hoped. But maybe as expected!?! Got up @ 5am this morning and took the JR to Tokyo station. Arrived @ the Palace around 7:30. Martin V. was there like last time, when I did my long run back in November. He circled the Palace with me two times. Time flew by but the speed was quite slow, around 5:30 pace. After that, I did two loops on my own. Well, you're never alone at the Palace, so I was not completely alone ;-). Paddy joined me and soon after Satohi. She was determined to go 30km with me. Turned out she had not to go that far today. Paddy took off after some km and Satohi and I kept on jogging. My pace was really slow, 5:40 and I didn't feel any good rhythm today. Energy was low as well. I had no breakfast and didn't take energy gels with me but I don't think that should be a major problem. Paddy was back from his Tempo run at the 35k mark and I thought that I will not be able to run the whole 65km today. At 38k, Christiane showed up. She wanted to get me through the toughest part. But I had to tell here that I will stop at 40km and take a rest. So, Satohi, Christiane and Paddy had to continue their run without me. I sat down and finished my energy drink and had a power bar. Enjoyed the view of the Palace. I don't know what the problem was today. Probably a combination of training, rest, energy intake, weather conditions, etc. Will rest tomorrow, observe my resting HR and have some more food than usual. My legs are perfect, no problems at all. Keep you updated.

Why didn`t you eat any breakfast?
I have not run any ultras (yet) but I think you need fuel.
Good to hear your legs are good.
Good luck.

A long run? And no fuel? Hm...... not a good idea, I think. Just read something about eating something light before a long run, seems to be very important. But if that's the only problem you had, that's easy to solve.

Yes, I would agree with Jon and Bernd and add that we all have occasional days when we feel great and occasional days when we just don't have it. This was a down day for you, but I would not worry about it. And anyway, 40k is not a light jog!
